𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘁-𝗭𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

We caught up with the team delivering our groundworks package for our client at the Wallend 400kV GIS Substation (Isle of Grain) for the National Grid.

This project is a key component of National Grid’s £2.7 billion investment programme to maintain, upgrade & develop the electricity infrastructure across the South East of England.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝗚𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲🔍
J Coffey is delivering the civil engineering required for this clean energy hub:
• 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 & 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗮𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 6,000m3 of foundation excavations & 250 pile croppings.
• 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲: 4,900m3 of total concrete, featuring a complex 75x25m ‘sandwich slab’ transformer hall & FRC bases for auxiliary structures.
• 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 & 𝗨𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀: Construction of main contractor compounds; 14,500m2, surface/foul drainage, site comms & UKPN & Southern Water trenching.
• 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀: 1,700lm of kerbing & 3,000m2 of blacktop roads, complete with signage & lighting.

𝗢𝗻-𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: 𝗦𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀, 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 ♻️
At Wallend, we’ve replaced traditional fossil-fuel generators with Instagrid portable battery systems, completely transforming our carbon footprint:
❌ Traditional Generator: Emits up to 10,800 tCO₂ annually
✅ Instagrid System: Emits 0 tCO₂ at point of use

By adopting this technology, we are not only cutting carbon emissions but also drastically reducing noise pollution, eliminating toxic fumes, removing trip hazards & improving overall site efficiency.
